Stereoisomeeristä

Stereoisomeeristä (stereoisomers) are a type of isomer that have the same molecular formula and the same atom connectivity but differ in the three-dimensional arrangement of their atoms in space. This difference in spatial arrangement leads to distinct physical and chemical properties.

There are two main types of stereoisomers: enantiomers and diastereomers. Enantiomers are stereoisomers that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, much like left and right hands. They possess opposite configurations at all chiral centers. Enantiomers typically have identical physical properties such as melting point and boiling point, but they differ in their interaction with plane-polarized light (optical activity) and in their biological activity. Diastereomers, on the other hand, are stereoisomers that are not mirror images of each other. They can be non-superimposable or superimposable mirror images, but the key distinction is that they do not have opposite configurations at all chiral centers. Diastereomers generally have different physical and chemical properties.

The presence of stereoisomers is particularly important in organic chemistry and biochemistry, as the three-dimensional structure of molecules can significantly affect their reactivity and function. For instance, many biological molecules, such as enzymes and receptors, are chiral and can interact differently with enantiomers, leading to different biological effects. The synthesis and separation of specific stereoisomers are crucial in fields like pharmaceutical development, where one enantiomer of a drug may be therapeutic while the other is inactive or even harmful.
