Stellbereich

Stellbereich is a term used in German technical and engineering contexts to describe the range of values within which a parameter of a device, instrument, or system can be set or adjusted. It specifies the allowable or intended setpoints for configuration, control, or calibration, and is not necessarily the current operating value.

In practice, the Stellbereich is defined by design limits and may be influenced by safety margins, hardware constraints, and calibration requirements. It is commonly stated in datasheets, manuals, and technical drawings as a minimum and maximum value, for example a voltage setting range, a travel or rotation range, or a temperature setpoint range. The concept helps users understand what adjustments are possible without risking damage or improper operation.

The Stellbereich is distinct from related concepts such as the Messbereich (measurement range), which describes the range over which a device can accurately measure a parameter, and the Betriebsbereich or Betriebsgrenze (operating range), which may describe environmental or dynamic limits for normal operation. In some cases the Stellbereich may be smaller than the physical range due to calibration, control strategy, or safety considerations.

Examples include a potentiometer with a Stellbereich of 0 to 270 degrees of rotation, a programmable DAC with an output range of 0 to 5 volts, or a process controller setpoint range of -50 to +150 degrees Celsius. Understanding the Stellbereich is essential for proper configuration, safe operation, and predictable performance.
