Steinhof

Steinhof is a district within the 11th Viennese municipality of Simmering. Historically, the name Steinhof referred to the area surrounding a large estate, which later became the site of significant public institutions. The most prominent of these is the Psychiatric Hospital of Vienna, officially known as the Otto Wagner Hospital, a landmark architectural complex designed by Otto Wagner. This hospital was established in the early 20th century and was a pioneering example of its kind.

The district is characterized by its green spaces and the imposing presence of the Otto Wagner Hospital buildings, which include numerous pavilions and the iconic Church of St. Leopold, also designed by Wagner. St. Leopold's Church, with its distinctive dome and mosaic decorations, is a notable example of Viennese Art Nouveau architecture and is a protected monument.

Beyond the hospital, Steinhof is primarily a residential area with a mix of apartment buildings and single-family homes. The district benefits from its proximity to the Lainzer Tiergarten, a large nature reserve and park, offering recreational opportunities for residents. Public transport connections, including tram lines, link Steinhof to other parts of Vienna. The area maintains a relatively quiet and suburban atmosphere despite being within the city limits.
