StartStopbits refers to a concept in telecommunications and data transmission protocols, specifically related to the framing of data in serial communication. It is a method used to synchronize the transmission and reception of data between devices, ensuring that each byte or character is correctly identified and processed.

In serial communication, data is sent one bit at a time over a single channel. To distinguish between individual bytes, a start bit and one or more stop bits are appended to each byte. The start bit signals the beginning of a new byte, while the stop bit(s) indicate the end. This framing structure allows the receiving device to detect the start and end of each byte, even in the absence of a continuous clock signal.

The most common configuration uses one start bit, eight data bits, and one or two stop bits, often abbreviated as "1 start bit, 8 data bits, 1 or 2 stop bits" (e.g., 1S8D1P or 1S8D2P). The number of stop bits can vary depending on the communication protocol, with one stop bit being the most widely used. Additional stop bits may be employed in certain protocols to provide extra time for the receiving device to process the byte.
