Stanislaus

Stanislaus is the anglicized form of the Slavic given name Stanislav, from elements meaning “to stand” and “glory.” It is used as a personal name and surname and appears in several place names in North America, especially in California.

Saint Stanislaus of Szczepanów, also known as Stanislaus of Kraków, was a 11th‑century bishop of Kraków who was martyred in 1079 by King Bolesław II the Bold. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and is the patron saint of Poland; his feast day is celebrated on 11 April.

In California, Stanislaus County is a central valley county with Modesto as its seat. The Stanislaus River runs through the county and is a major tributary of the San Joaquin River. The river and surrounding areas gave their name to Stanislaus National Forest, a large protected area in the Sierra Nevada that spans Tuolumne, Calaveras, and Mariposa counties. California State University, Stanislaus, commonly called Stanislaus State, is a public university in Turlock and part of the California State University system.
