Standardiyksiköitä, or standard units, refers to a set of agreed-upon measurements used for consistency and comparability in science, engineering, trade, and everyday life. The most widely adopted system of standard units is the International System of Units, or SI (Système International d'Unités), which evolved from the metric system.

The SI system is based on seven base units: the meter for length, the kilogram for mass, the second for time, the ampere for electric current, the kelvin for thermodynamic temperature, the mole for amount of substance, and the candela for luminous intensity. All other SI units, known as derived units, are formed by combining these base units. Examples include the newton for force (kg·m/s²) and the watt for power (kg·m²/s³).

The concept of standard units is crucial for several reasons. It allows scientists worldwide to replicate experiments and share data accurately. In international trade, standardized measurements prevent disputes and ensure that goods meet agreed-upon specifications. For consumers, standard units provide a common understanding of quantities, making it easier to compare products and make informed purchasing decisions.

The development and maintenance of standard units are typically overseen by international organizations like the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), which ensures the units remain consistent and are based on fundamental physical constants. This ongoing effort guarantees the reliability and universality of our measurement system.
