Stadttürme

Stadttürme, plural of Stadtturm, are towers that belong to a city’s historical built environment. The term designates towers that were part of urban fortifications, gates, or civic structures, and it is used to distinguish them from church towers, castle keeps, or industrial towers. Stadttürme served several public functions across the Middle Ages and early modern period.

Historically, towns constructed walls and a sequence of towers to monitor approaches, defend the town, and signal alarms. Watchmen were stationed in or around these towers, and the openings and battlements facilitated observation and communication. Over time, many Stadttürme gained other roles, serving as bells or clock towers, or as landmarks connected to town halls or markets.
