SplitLevel

SplitLevel refers to a style of residential architecture characterized by multiple short sets of stairs connecting different levels of the house. Unlike a multi-story home where all floors are stacked directly above each other, a split-level home features living spaces that are staggered in height. Typically, the main living area is situated at one level, with a bedroom or family room located a half-story up or down. This arrangement creates distinct zones within the home and often results in a more compact footprint than a traditional two-story house.

The split-level design emerged in the mid-20th century, gaining popularity in suburban developments. Its design was often a response to building on sloped lots, allowing the house to adapt to the terrain. The staggered levels can provide a sense of separation between different activities, such as formal living and informal family spaces. Common variations include the true split-level, where the foundation is divided into three or four levels, and the split-foyer or raised ranch, where the main entrance opens to a landing with stairs leading both up and down. While less common in new construction today, many split-level homes remain prevalent in older suburban neighborhoods.
