Splicingmodulating

Splicingmodulating refers to any process or intervention that alters the normal outcome of pre-messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) splicing. Splicing is a critical step in gene expression where non-coding regions called introns are removed from the pre-mRNA transcript, and coding regions called exons are joined together to form mature messenger RNA (mRNA). This mature mRNA then serves as a template for protein synthesis.

There are several ways splicing can be modulated. Naturally occurring alternative splicing allows a single gene to produce multiple different mRNA molecules and, consequently, different protein isoforms. This is a highly regulated process that contributes to cellular complexity and function. External factors or experimental manipulations can also influence splicing. For instance, certain drugs or small molecules are being developed as splicing modulators to target diseases caused by aberrant splicing. These therapeutic approaches aim to correct or alter splicing patterns to restore normal gene function. Genetic mutations can also disrupt splicing, leading to various genetic disorders.
