Spittelstedt

Spittelstedt is a former Thuringian administrative district in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The district was dissolved on July 1, 2007, and merged into the Kyffhäuserkreis district. Prior to its dissolution, it was one of the 11 administrative districts of the state of Thuringia.

Geography and Economy

The district of Spittelstedt was situated in the northeast of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, bordering the German states of Thuringia and Brandenburg. Its economy was largely based on agriculture and lignite mining. The district of Spittelstedt comprised the river valley of the River Helme and parts of the Luther Mountains. The district was not heavily populated, with a population density of around 50 people per square kilometer.

Administrative History

The district of Spittelstedt was one of the 15 districts of the province of Saxony and the Free State of Prussia, formed in 1886. After being part of the province of Saxony-Anhalt, the district belonged to the State of Thuringia from May 1, 1920, to June 30, 1952, and then to Saxony until 1990. The former East Germany's politicians divided the territory in 1952, internally, between the socialist states Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. After the German reunification in 1990, the district belonged to the state of Thuringia again until its dissolution in 2007.

Today

Spittelstedt no longer exists as a separate administrative district in Germany. The area has been absorbed by the Kyffhäuserkreis district.
