Spijkerbroek

Spijkerbroek is the Dutch word for jeans. Jeans are a type of trousers, typically made from denim or dungaree cloth, which originated in the United States in the late 19th century. The original purpose of jeans was for durable workwear. They became fashionable casual wear in the mid-20th century.

The term "spijkerbroek" literally translates to "nail trousers," a reference to the rivets that were historically used to reinforce the pockets of denim work pants, preventing them from tearing under the weight of tools. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis are credited with patenting the riveted work pants in 1873, marking the birth of modern jeans.

Over time, jeans evolved from utilitarian work garments to a symbol of youth culture, rebellion, and casual fashion. They have been adopted and adapted by designers and consumers worldwide, leading to a vast array of styles, washes, and fits. From skinny jeans to bootcut, distressed to dark indigo, the spijkerbroek remains a ubiquitous and versatile garment in wardrobes globally.
