Sphenodiscidae

Sphenodiscidae is a family of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Trochoidea. The family is considered to be part of the clade Sorbeoconcha. Sphenodiscidae are commonly known as false owl limpets.

Members of this family have a distinctive shell shape, which is typically flat and disk-like. This shell shape is a key characteristic that distinguishes them from other families of sea snails. Sphenodiscidae are often found in shallow coastal waters, where the seafloor is marked by a variety of coral reef formations.

Sphenodiscidae snails, like other sea snails, are primarily marine herbivores. They feed on a variety of algae that cover rocks and offer grazing opportunities. The diet of these species is believed to be limited to what their shell shape and situational location afford.

Some researchers have noted specific physical characteristics that may be used to classify Sphenodiscidae into specific species. Notable features include shell size, prominent cephalic tentacles, and vacuolated axial suture patterns, though sexing some of the species has come into question due to the form and by current criteria. Limited discovered habitats are held in both Mediterranean Sea and Indo-Pacific region seas.
