Spermophores
Spermophores are structures found in some invertebrates, particularly in arthropods and mollusks, that are used for the transfer of sperm. These are essentially packages containing sperm, which are then delivered to the female during mating. The exact morphology and function of spermophores can vary significantly between different species. In some cases, spermophores are released by the male and then collected by the female, while in others, they are directly inserted into the female's reproductive tract. The sperm within a spermophore may be arranged in a specific order, and the structure itself can sometimes be modified to aid in sperm protection or to stimulate the female. The term spermophore is sometimes used interchangeably with spermatophore, though the latter is more commonly used across a broader range of taxa and generally refers to a larger, more complex structure. Understanding spermophores is important for comprehending the diverse reproductive strategies employed by invertebrates.
