Speichenlöchern

Speichenlöcher are openings in wheel components through which spokes are guided and anchored. They are essential for transferring tension from spokes to the wheel and for maintaining the geometric relationships between hub, rim, and the spoke pattern. The term is used to describe holes in both the rim and the hub flange where the spokes pass.

In rims, Speichenlöcher are drilled or punched holes that accommodate spoke nipples. The holes are typically sized to fit the nipple diameter and the spoke gauge, often on the order of about 1.8 to 2.3 millimeters in standard aluminum rims, though exact dimensions vary by manufacturer and rim type. Edges are deburred and sometimes chamfered to reduce wear on nipples and spokes. Some rims use internal nipples or larger holes to accommodate different lacing patterns, which can influence hole shape, spacing, and strength.

In hubs, Speichenlöcher refer to the holes in the flange through which spokes enter and exit. These holes must match the spoke diameter and are positioned to realize the chosen lacing pattern (radial, 2-cross, 3-cross, etc.). The fit and alignment of hub holes influence spoke tension balance and wheel stiffness.

Manufacturing and quality control focus on smooth edges, proper hole diameter, and avoidance of stress risers. Drilled or punched processes, deburring, and occasional sleeving or reinforcement in high-stress rims help prevent cracks around holes. Wear or deformation around Speichenlöcher can lead to spoke loosening, reduced tension, or rim/hub damage, necessitating repair or replacement of components.
