Sozin

Sozin, known as Fire Lord Sozin, is a historical figure in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. He was the Fire Nation’s ruler and the architect of its early imperial expansion, setting in motion the events that would shape the world for generations by initiating the Fire Nation’s conquest of other nations and the start of the Hundred Year War.

Sozin is best remembered for leveraging Sozin’s Comet, a celestial event that appears roughly every hundred years, to dramatically boost Fire Nation firebending power. With the comet’s fiery influx, his campaigns achieved rapid and overwhelming success, enabling the Fire Nation to invade and subdue other nations more quickly than before. This period marks the beginning of a century of conflict that defines much of the series’ backstory.

Historically, Sozin was a contemporary of Avatar Roku, and the two were once allies. He ultimately betrayed Roku and pursued conquest, an act that cemented the Fire Nation’s aggressive stance for generations. His campaigns contributed to the near-extinction of the Air Nomads, one of the war’s most enduring tragedies, and shaped Fire Nation policy for decades.

Family and succession: Sozin was the father of Azulon, and the grandfather of Ozai. After Sozin’s death, Azulon ascended to the throne, continuing the dynastic line that would eventually produce Ozai, the Fire Lord depicted in the series’ main arc. Sozin’s legacy endures in the history and lore of the Avatar universe, notably through the enduring association of his name with Sozin’s Comet and the Fire Nation’s imperial history.
