Soundtospelling

Soundtospelling is the process of converting spoken sounds into written representations in a language, i.e., mapping phonemes to graphemes. In linguistics and education, the term covers phoneme-to-grapheme conversion and the study of spelling systems. The mapping is not always deterministic because orthography varies and pronunciation changes over time, creating irregular spellings.

In practice, soundtospelling relies on inventories of phonemes and graphemes and their correspondences, guided by phonotactics and syllable structure. It underpins phonics-based reading and spelling instruction, including synthetic phonics (teaching pure sound–symbol correspondences) and analytic approaches (deriving sound from word patterns).

In computational linguistics, soundtospelling relates to grapheme-to-phoneme (G2P) and phoneme-to-grapheme (P2G) conversion. G2P systems generate pronunciations from text; P2G systems predict spellings from phonetic representations. Approaches range from rule-based methods to statistical and neural models.

Challenges include irregular orthography, multiple spellings for a single sound (ph vs f), and a single letter mapping to multiple sounds (c as /k/ or /s/). Silent letters and regional accents further complicate the mapping. Some languages have shallow orthographies with near one-to-one mappings; others, like English, are highly irregular.
