Sottounità

Sottounità is a term used across disciplines to denote a distinct component that forms part of a larger entity. It derives from sotto- 'under' and unità 'unit', and it emphasizes a modular or hierarchical organization in which the whole is built from identifiable, interacting parts.

In biology and biochemistry, subunits are the individual polypeptide chains that assemble into protein complexes or enzymes. The function and regulation of a molecule often depend on the number, arrangement, and interfaces of its subunits; the same protein may form different assemblies with distinct activity.

In chemistry and materials science, subunits refer to repeating units within polymers, crystalline lattices, or molecular machines. Knowing the subunit composition and how subunits interact helps explain properties, assembly pathways, and stoichiometry of the larger structure.
