This mediator variable is thought to be on the causal pathway between the independent and dependent variables.

The core idea behind sommittelumenetelmät is to break down a direct effect into indirect effects. For example, if a researcher is studying the effect of exercise (independent variable) on happiness (dependent variable), they might hypothesize that the frequency of social interaction during exercise (mediator variable) explains part of this relationship. The method would aim to quantify this indirect effect.
