Solventpolymer is a descriptive term in polymer science that refers to a polymer that can dissolve in a solvent or that forms a swollen network when immersed in a liquid. The term does not denote a single chemical class; it describes the interaction between a polymer and a solvent, which is central to processing, formulation, and performance of polymer systems. Solventpolymer systems are encountered in solution casting, coating, electrospinning, and adhesive formulation, where a polymer must be adequately soluble or controllably swellable to achieve the desired structure.

Solubility and swelling are governed by polymer chemistry, solvent polarity, temperature, and molecular weight. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter chi and Hansen solubility parameters are commonly used to assess compatibility: good solvents have lower chi values, promoting dissolution, while poor solvents lead to partial dissolution, phase separation, or gelation. For swollen networks (gels), crosslink density and network polarity determine the swelling ratio and mechanical properties.

Dissolution involves overcoming interchain attractions and solvation of polymer chains by solvent molecules. Some polymers require specific solvents or co-solvents, or elevated temperatures, to dissolve fully. In solution, concentration affects viscosity, chain conformation, and diffusion. In gels, solvent uptake is controlled by network architecture and crosslinking, leading to environmentally responsive materials.

Applications include coatings and films, paints, inks, adhesives, drug delivery systems, and chromatography media. Safety and environmental considerations are important, as many effective solvents are volatile, flammable, or toxic, prompting efforts to identify greener alternatives and minimize solvent use through design of intrinsically solvent-friendly polymers.
