Solupainetukset, a Finnish term roughly translating to "cell pressures," refers to the internal forces and tensions experienced by plant cells. These pressures are crucial for maintaining the turgidity and structural integrity of plant tissues, enabling them to stand upright and support their own weight.

The primary contributor to solupainetukset is turgor pressure. This is the outward pressure exerted by the cell's contents, primarily the vacuole filled with water, against the cell wall. Water enters the vacuole through osmosis, driven by a higher solute concentration within the cell compared to its surroundings. As water accumulates, the vacuole expands and pushes the cytoplasm against the cell wall.

The cell wall, though rigid, is also somewhat elastic. It resists the outward pressure from the vacuole, creating an opposing inward pressure. This interplay of forces results in a state of hydrostatic pressure within the cell. When a plant is well-watered, the solupainetukset are high, leading to firm, turgid cells and a robust plant.
