Solukuljetus, also known as respiratory transport, refers to the process of gas exchange and transportation within the human body, specifically the intake of oxygen and the expulsion of carbon dioxide. This essential physiological function is primarily carried out by the respiratory system, in conjunction with the circulatory system.

The process begins with inhalation, where air enters the lungs and reaches the alveoli, tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the alveolar membrane into the surrounding capillaries, while carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses into the alveoli to be exhaled. This exchange is facilitated by the difference in partial pressures of the gases on either side of the membrane.

Once in the bloodstream, oxygen binds to hemoglobin molecules within red blood cells, forming oxyhemoglobin. This complex is then transported to tissues throughout the body. At the tissue level, oxygen dissociates from hemoglobin and diffuses into the cells, where it is used in metabolic processes. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular metabolism, binds to hemoglobin or dissolves in plasma to be transported back to the lungs for expulsion.
