The SolarWinds attack, also known as SUNBURST, was a sophisticated cyberattack that came to light in December 2020. The attack targeted SolarWinds, a company that provides IT management software. A threat actor, believed to be a nation-state, infiltrated SolarWinds' systems and inserted a malicious backdoor into the company's Orion software.

This compromised Orion software was then distributed to thousands of SolarWinds' customers, including numerous government agencies and Fortune 500 companies. Once installed, the backdoor allowed attackers to gain access to the victim networks, enabling them to move laterally, exfiltrate data, and conduct further reconnaissance. The full extent of the compromise and the attackers' objectives are still under investigation.

The attack highlighted significant vulnerabilities in the software supply chain, where a compromise of a single vendor could have widespread repercussions. It demonstrated a high level of technical skill and planning by the perpetrators.
