Soiltermites

Soiltermites is a term used in soil ecology to describe a hypothetical group of subterranean, eusocial insects living primarily within the mineral soil horizon. In this concept, colonies construct extensive tunnel networks in the soil matrix and extract nourishment from decaying plant material, fungal hyphae, and other organic debris present below the surface. The term is not an officially recognized taxon; it functions as a guild name to contrast with surface-dwelling termites and other subterranean organisms. There is no single agreed-upon definition; different researchers have used varying criteria for what constitutes a soiltermite.

They are imagined to thrive in moist, well-aerated soils with ample organic matter, occupying root zones and deeper horizons; tunnel networks can influence soil structure and aeration, and they would interact with soil fungi and detritivores. In line with termite-like social systems, a soiltermite colony would be eusocial, with castes including workers, soldiers, and reproductives. Reproduction and colony growth would be tied to soil moisture and temperature regimes.

If present, soiltermites could contribute to decomposition and nutrient cycling, alter soil porosity, and affect plant root health. They are generally considered of theoretical interest rather than an established component of real soil faunas, with evidence coming mainly from modeling and limited field observations.
