Smörgåsbord

Smörgåsbord is a traditional Swedish meal served as a buffet or table with a wide selection of cold and hot dishes, breads, and accompaniments. The term combines smörgås, meaning an open-faced sandwich, with bord, meaning table, reflecting its origins in Swedish hospitality.

A typical arrangement begins with cold dishes such as pickled herring, gravlax, smoked fish, shrimp, eggs, salads, and seasonal vegetables; followed by hot items like meatballs, gravied meats, potato dishes, Janssons frestelse, and sausages. Cheese, spreads, and a variety of breads form a final, staple course, often accompanied by sauces such as dill or mustard. Desserts and coffee may be served at the end of the meal. Traditional beverages include aquavit (snaps), beer, and coffee.

Smörgåsbord is central to Swedish festive meals and regional variations, including the Christmas julbord and midsummer feasts. While strongly associated with Sweden, similar buffet-style spreads appear across the Nordic countries and beyond, adapting to local meats and seafood. Etiquette emphasizes self-service and a sequence that traditionally starts with cold dishes before moving to hot dishes, with guests taking small portions to sample a range of items.
