Smalarmbakterieöverväxt, often referred to as SIBO, is a medical condition characterized by an abnormally high number of bacteria in the small intestine. The small intestine normally contains a relatively low concentration of bacteria compared to the large intestine. In SIBO, this balance is disrupted, leading to an overgrowth of these microorganisms.

The causes of SIBO are varied and can include underlying gastrointestinal motility disorders, such as those seen in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or gastroparesis. Conditions that impair the normal cleansing mechanism of the small intestine, like surgery or certain medications, can also contribute. Furthermore, reduced stomach acid production, known as hypochlorhydria, or structural abnormalities in the small intestine can create an environment conducive to bacterial proliferation.

Symptoms of SIBO can include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, and gas. These symptoms often mimic those of other digestive disorders, making diagnosis sometimes challenging. Diagnosis typically involves a breath test, where a patient consumes a specific sugar solution and their breath is analyzed for gases produced by bacteria.

Treatment for SIBO usually involves antibiotics to reduce the bacterial overgrowth. Dietary changes, such as low-FODMAP diets, may also be recommended to help manage symptoms and prevent recurrence. Addressing any underlying causes is crucial for long-term management of the condition.
