Skólakerfiðs

Skólakerfið is the Icelandic term for the education system. It encompasses a structured approach to learning from early childhood through to higher education. The system is largely publicly funded and regulated by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

Compulsory education in Iceland begins at age six with preschool (leikskóli) and continues through primary and lower secondary school (grunnskóli), typically ending at age 16. This phase provides a broad curriculum designed to equip students with fundamental knowledge and skills.

Following compulsory schooling, students can choose to enter upper secondary education (framhaldsskóli). This level offers a variety of academic and vocational programs, preparing students for either university studies or direct entry into the workforce. Upper secondary education is not compulsory but is widely attended.

Higher education in Iceland is provided by universities. The University of Iceland and the University of Reykjavík are the largest and most prominent institutions, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Vocational training at the tertiary level is also available.

The Icelandic education system emphasizes inclusivity and aims to provide equal opportunities for all students. There is a strong focus on fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect societal changes and advancements in educational pedagogy.
