A skærebræt, or cutting board, is a durable board on which to place material for cutting. The kitchen type of a cutting board is commonly used in preparing food; other types exist for cutting different materials. Kitchen cutting boards are often made of wood, plastic, or bamboo. Historically, materials like slate, stone, or even metal have been used.

Wood cutting boards are favored by many chefs for their natural aesthetic and resilience. Many plastic boards are color-coded to prevent cross-contamination between different food types, such as raw meat and vegetables.

Bamboo cutting boards offer a sustainable and eco-friendly option. Bamboo is a fast-growing grass that is naturally antimicrobial and hard. It provides a good balance between knife-friendliness and durability. Like wood, bamboo can be sealed to reduce moisture absorption, but it also requires careful cleaning.

Regardless of the material, a cutting board's primary function is to protect countertops and knife edges. Regular cleaning and proper maintenance, including occasional oiling for wood and bamboo, and thorough sanitization for all types, are crucial for hygiene and longevity.
