It translates literally to "slide-prone" or "avalanche-prone," though in common usage it specifically refers to the risk of earth or snow sliding down a slope. This characteristic is often a result of geological factors such as the composition of the soil or rock, the steepness of the slope, and the presence of water. Saturation of soil can significantly increase its susceptibility to sliding by reducing friction between soil particles.

The geological conditions that contribute to skredbenäget include the presence of clay layers, which can become unstable when wet, or loose, unconsolidated sediments. Steep slopes, by their very nature, have a greater gravitational pull on the material composing them, making them more vulnerable.
