Skolvardagen

Skolvardagen is the term used in Swedish to describe a normal school day, i.e., a day when students attend classes and are not on weekend or holiday breaks. It is used to distinguish regular school days from days off such as summer vacation, autumn break, or public holidays.

The word combines skol- meaning school and vardagen meaning the everyday or ordinary day. In administrative contexts, school calendars and discussions about scheduling often refer to skolvardagen to indicate a standard day within the academic year.

A skolvardag usually runs Monday through Friday during the school year, with start and end times that vary by age, municipality, and school. Typical lessons last about 40–60 minutes, with breaks between classes and a longer midday lunch period. Younger students may have additional after-school care or supervision, referred to as fritidshem, after the regular school day ends.

Schedules and exact timing are set locally by municipalities and individual schools, within national educational guidelines. Variations can occur due to assemblies, examinations, staff meetings, or planned teacher planning time. While the structure of a skolvardag is broadly similar across Sweden, the precise timetable can differ from one school to another.
