Skloubit

Skloubit is a hypothetical mineral-like substance described in speculative mineralogy and science fiction. It is proposed to occur as tiny, iridescent crystals embedded in ultramafic meteorites or high-pressure metamorphic rocks. The term is used in thought experiments about mineral stability and material limits.

The name "skloubit" derives from the fictional root sklou- meaning "to bind," with the common mineral suffix -bit. It was introduced in collaborative speculative works in the late 20th century and has since appeared in various novels and academic-like simulations.

Described as a layered, tetrahedral framework with metal-rich inclusions; purportedly extremely hard (Mohs 9–9.5) and with a high refractive index (>2.0). Some descriptions mention weak luminescence under UV and stability up to high temperatures under specific conditions.

Proposed to form under rapid shock metamorphism in meteorite parent bodies or deep crustal environments. In fiction, its presence signals extraordinary geological processes.

In speculative material science, skloubit is used to discuss the theoretical upper bounds of hardness in crystalline materials. In cultural contexts, it appears as a plot device or collectible in science-fiction media.
