Skjaldkirtilssjúkdóm is the Icelandic term for thyroid disease. This encompasses a range of conditions affecting the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located at the base of the neck. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism, influencing vital bodily functions such as heart rate, body temperature, and energy expenditure.

Disorders of the thyroid can lead to either an overactive thyroid, known as hyperthyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces too much hormone, leading to symptoms like rapid heartbeat, weight loss, anxiety, and tremors. Hypothyroidism, conversely, results from insufficient hormone production, causing symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and depression.

Other common thyroid conditions include goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, and thyroid nodules, which are lumps that can form within the thyroid. Thyroid cancer is a less common but serious condition. Causes of thyroid disease are varied, including autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease, iodine deficiency, and genetic factors. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure hormone levels, imaging techniques, and sometimes a biopsy. Treatment depends on the specific condition and can include medication, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for controlling symptoms and preventing complications.
