Skirjaimen

Skirjaimen is the name given to a small archipelago and the associated ancient writing system developed there. Located in the northern seas of the fictional continent of Norania, Skirjaimen has been the subject of linguistic and archaeological study since the early modern period. The term is used to describe both the geographic cluster and the script found on monuments, vessels, and manuscripts recovered from the islands.

The archipelago comprises three main islands and several islets, with a rugged coastline, sparse woodlands, and tidal zones. The climate is coastal and variable, with cold winters and brief, bright summers. The landscape includes rocky shores, peat bogs, and small cedar-and-pine groves that shape local settlement patterns and ferry routes between the islands.

The Skirjaimen script is an early writing system combining logographic and alphabetic signs. Inscriptions range from simple memorial marks to elaborate ritual texts, and are dated to roughly the late 9th through the 13th centuries in the in-universe chronology. Decipherment has progressed gradually; major milestones include the discovery of the Skirjaimen Obelisk inscriptions and the subsequent interpretation of a vernacular gloss found in the Gråe Codex, which aided phonetic reconstruction.

Archaeological work on several sites has uncovered stone stelae, pottery sherds, and manuscript fragments. The material culture suggests a society organized around coastal foraging, seasonal fishing, and a ritual calendar anchored to maritime cycles. Contemporary communities preserve Skirjaimen folklore through festivals, songs, and oral traditions that reference the archipelago’s ancient origins.

Today Skirjaimen is studied by linguistic and archaeological researchers and appears in regional museums and digital archives. Ongoing projects aim to compile a complete sign list, produce a bilingual corpus, and reconstruct its phonology for broader access.
