Skarphetsfiltre, often translated as sharpening filters, are digital image processing techniques used to enhance the perceived detail and clarity of an image. They work by increasing the contrast along edges within the image. This makes boundaries between different colored or textured areas more distinct, giving the impression of a sharper picture.

The fundamental principle behind most sharpening filters is edge detection. They identify areas where pixel values change abruptly, signifying an edge. Once an edge is detected, the filter typically increases the difference in pixel values on either side of that edge. This can be achieved through various algorithms, with the unsharp mask being a very common and effective method.

The unsharp mask process involves creating a blurred version of the original image, subtracting this blurred version from the original to create a "mask" that highlights the edges, and then adding a portion of this mask back to the original image. The amount of sharpening is controlled by parameters like radius, amount, and threshold. Radius determines the size of the area around an edge that is considered for sharpening. Amount controls the strength of the sharpening effect, and threshold prevents sharpening in areas of smooth gradient, thus avoiding noise amplification.

While sharpening filters can significantly improve image quality, over-sharpening can lead to undesirable artifacts. These can include halos around edges, increased noise, and a "crunchy" or unnatural appearance. Therefore, it is important to use sharpening filters judiciously and to preview the results carefully to achieve the desired enhancement without introducing detrimental side effects.
