Skandinavienkai

Skandinavienkai is a container terminal within the Port of Lübeck, located in Travemünde on Germany’s Baltic coast. The name translates as “Scandinavia quay” and reflects its function as a major transshipment hub for container traffic between Northern Europe and the Baltic region, with a particular emphasis on services to and from Scandinavia.

The terminal is part of the Lübeck Port Authority (Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft, LHG) complex and is operated by a dedicated terminal operator. It offers deep-water berths capable of handling modern container vessels, container handling cranes, storage yards, and an intermodal rail terminal. The site is connected to the German rail network and national motorways, enabling efficient transfer of containers to and from road and rail modes.

Skandinavienkai serves as a hub for liner services to Scandinavia and other Northern European ports. In addition to container handling, the facility supports intermodal transport, with rail connections to major distribution centers and industrial areas across Germany and beyond.

Construction and development of Skandinavienkai began in the mid- to late 20th century, as part of the Baltic region’s growing container traffic. The terminal has undergone several modernization projects to increase capacity and efficiency and remains a key component of the Port of Lübeck’s operations.
