Självpratinstruktionssjälvprat, often abbreviated as SIS, refers to a metacognitive strategy where an individual uses self-talk to instruct themselves on how to perform a task, and then uses self-talk again to reflect on or reinforce that instruction. This technique involves a recursive process of internal dialogue.

The first layer of self-talk is directive, providing step-by-step guidance for an action. For example, a person might say to themselves, "First, I need to find the screwdriver. Then, I will insert it into the screw head. Finally, I will turn it clockwise." This internal monologue serves to break down complex tasks into manageable steps and direct attention to the necessary actions.

The second layer of self-talk, the "instruktionssjälvprat" itself, occurs after or during the execution of the initial instructions. This part of the process involves self-reflection and reinforcement. The individual might think, "Okay, I found the screwdriver, just like I planned. Now, I'll focus on turning it smoothly." Alternatively, if a mistake is made, the self-talk might be corrective, such as, "Oops, I turned it too fast. I should slow down and be more careful." This reflective component allows for learning, adaptation, and self-correction.

SIS is believed to enhance performance by improving focus, reducing errors, and promoting self-regulation. It is particularly useful for tasks requiring precision, memory, or problem-solving. The effectiveness of SIS can depend on the clarity and specificity of the self-talk, as well as the individual's ability to engage in reflective thought.
