Sisääntulo

Sisääntulo is a Finnish term that translates to “income” in English and is used in both everyday conversation and formal documentation to describe the money received by individuals or entities over a specific period. It is a central concept in personal finance, business accounting, and public policy, forming the basis for budgeting, taxation, and social welfare assessments.

Various types of sisääntulo exist. Employment income (työtulo) includes salaries, wages, and bonuses received for work performed. Self‑employment and business income (yritystulo) encompass profits earned by entrepreneurs and corporations. Investment income (passiivinen tulo) covers dividends, interest, rental income, and capital gains from the sale of assets. Social benefits (sosiaalituoli) such as unemployment support, pensions (eläkkeet), and other public assistance also qualify as sources of sisääntulo. In addition, occasional or irregular income, for example from freelance projects or gifts, is recorded separately to maintain clear financial records.

The measurement of sisääntulo is crucial for multiple reasons. For households, it determines disposable income—the amount available after taxes and mandatory contributions—which directly influences consumption, savings, and debt decisions. For governments, the aggregation of all reported sisääntulo informs tax revenue estimates and enables the design of progressive tax rates. Moreover, employment agencies and social security administrations use income figures to assess eligibility for benefits and to set contribution levels.

In Finland, the tax authority administers a comprehensive system that requires individuals and businesses to report their sisääntulo annually. The tax bracket structure aims to maintain fairness, levying higher rates on larger income brackets while providing deductions for specific expenses related to earning income. Accurate reporting of income is therefore essential to comply with the law and to avoid penalties.

Beyond taxation, the concept of sisääntulo is integral to academic research, economic forecasting, and public discourse on wealth distribution. By distinguishing between different income streams, analysts can identify patterns of inequality, assess the impact of fiscal policies, and propose reforms that promote economic stability.
