Sinterointi

Sinterointi is a thermochemical process used to consolidate powdered materials into a solid, coherent mass. This is achieved by heating the powder to a temperature below its melting point. At this elevated temperature, atoms diffuse across the boundaries of the individual particles, causing them to bond together. The driving force for this atomic diffusion is the reduction in surface energy associated with the original powder.

The process typically involves several stages. Initially, when the powder is heated, a phenomenon known as "neck formation" occurs, where small bridges begin to form between adjacent particles. As heating continues, these necks grow, and the pores between the particles become smaller and more rounded. Eventually, if the process is carried out for a sufficient duration and at an appropriate temperature, the pores can become completely eliminated, resulting in a dense, solid object.
