Sink

Sinks usually include a basin, a drain with a trap, and a faucet providing hot and cold water. Many installations also feature an overflow and a strainer, with possible garbage disposal.

Materials vary by application; stainless steel is common in kitchens for durability, while vitreous china, enamel-coated cast iron, and engineered composites are typical in bathrooms or utility rooms.

Configurations include single or multiple bowls, sometimes with a built-in draining board. Mounting options range from drop-in to undermount and wall-mounted, affecting installation and cabinet design.

Common categories include kitchen sinks designed for heavy use, typically larger with deep bowls; bathroom sinks smaller and paired with a vanity; utility sinks built for durability and higher clearance.

Maintenance involves regular cleaning, clearing of drains to avoid clogs, and inspection for leaks or worn seals. Use mild cleaners and avoid abrasive surfaces. Hot water and chemical cleaners require caution.

Water efficiency can be improved with low-flow faucets and aerators, proper disposal practices, and choosing materials and fixtures with long service life.
