Singulative

Singulative refers to a grammatical number that distinguishes a single item from a group or a collective noun. While the most common grammatical numbers are singular (one), dual (two), and plural (more than two), some languages possess a singulative number to explicitly mark an individual entity. For instance, in certain Semitic languages, a plural form might exist to denote "many" and a singulative form to denote "one" of that kind, even when a singular form already exists for a single item. The singulative is not a universal feature of languages and is often found in languages that also have a plural. Its function is to provide a specific way to refer to a single instance when the context might otherwise suggest a collective or a general plural. This is distinct from the standard singular, which simply denotes one item without any implication of a larger group. The presence or absence of a singulative number is a typological feature that helps linguists classify and understand the grammatical systems of different languages. It highlights the diverse ways languages categorize quantity.
