Similan

Similan refers to the Similan Islands, a group of nine islands in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Phang Nga Province in southern Thailand. The name is derived from the Malay word sembilan, meaning nine. The archipelago forms Mu Ko Similan National Park, established to protect marine and coastal ecosystems and to support sustainable tourism.

Geography and environment: The islands lie about 70 kilometers northwest of Phuket. They are composed of granite outcrops with white-sand beaches, sheltered coves, and clear, turquoise waters. Surrounding marine areas host coral reefs, seagrass beds, and a diverse range of reef fish and other marine life. The protected status helps conserve habitats for species such as sea turtles and various invertebrates, while the area remains a popular destination for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Administration and access: The park is managed by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Most visitors reach the islands via day trips or live-aboard boats departing from Phuket, Khao Lak, or other coastal towns. Entrance fees and park permits are required. To limit environmental impact, access to some parts of the archipelago is regulated, and overnight stays are allowed only at designated camping sites with proper permits.

Conservation and seasons: The Similan Islands are subject to seasonal closures during the monsoon period to protect ecosystems and reduce damage from storms and heavy seas. The park is typically closed to visitors from mid-May through mid-November, with exact dates varying by year. Outside the closure period, the area remains a major site for ecotourism, research, and marine recreation.
