Silmäverisuonet

Silmäverisuonet refers to the blood vessels within the eye. These vessels are crucial for supplying oxygen and nutrients to the various structures of the eye and for removing waste products. The most prominent network of blood vessels is found in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. These retinal vessels are visible during an ophthalmoscopic examination.

The eye has a unique dual blood supply. The outer layers, including the choroid, are supplied by the posterior ciliary arteries. The inner layers, particularly the retina, are supplied by the central retinal artery, which branches into superior and inferior temporal and nasal arteries. Venous drainage occurs primarily through the central retinal vein, which eventually empties into the ophthalmic veins.

Disruptions to these delicate silmäverisuonet can lead to a range of visual impairments. Conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, where high blood sugar damages retinal vessels, or hypertensive retinopathy, caused by high blood pressure, can result in bleeding, swelling, and vision loss. Blockages of the retinal arteries or veins can cause sudden, profound vision loss. Age-related macular degeneration can also affect the blood vessels supporting the macula. Maintaining healthy blood circulation is therefore vital for good vision.
