Silmäripsien

Silmäripsien, commonly known as eyelashes in English, are the fine hairs that grow along the edges of the eyelids. They serve a protective function, acting as a barrier to prevent dust, debris, and other small particles from entering the eye. When a foreign object touches an eyelash, it triggers a blink reflex, helping to clear the irritant.

Eyelashes are composed of keratin, the same protein that makes up hair and fingernails. The length, thickness, and curl of eyelashes vary significantly among individuals, influenced by genetics and other factors. The average upper eyelid has around 100-150 eyelashes, while the lower eyelid has about 75-100. Eyelashes grow in cycles, typically lasting about six to ten weeks, and then shed naturally, being replaced by new growth.

In many cultures, long and thick eyelashes are considered an aesthetic feature. This has led to the development of various cosmetic products designed to enhance their appearance, such as mascara, eyelash curlers, and eyelash extensions. There are also treatments aimed at promoting eyelash growth, though their efficacy can vary. The health and appearance of eyelashes can sometimes be indicators of underlying health conditions, making them a subject of interest in both cosmetic and medical contexts.
