Silmäpohjakuvaukset, also known as fundus photography, is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique used in ophthalmology to document and examine the back of the eye, specifically the retina, optic disc, macula, and blood vessels. This process involves capturing high-resolution images of the fundus, providing a detailed view of its structures.

The procedure is typically performed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Before the imaging, dilating eye drops are often administered to widen the pupil, allowing for a better view of the fundus. The patient is then asked to look at a target within the fundus camera. The camera uses a bright light and a digital sensor to capture images of the retina. Different types of fundus cameras exist, including those that produce color photographs, red-free images (which highlight blood vessels), and fluorescein angiography images. Fluorescein angiography involves injecting a fluorescent dye into the bloodstream and then taking sequential photographs as the dye circulates through the retinal blood vessels, revealing abnormalities in blood flow.

These include diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachments, optic nerve diseases, and hypertensive retinopathy.
