Silmäläinen

Silmäläinen is a term that historically referred to a member of the Sami people, particularly those living in the easternmost parts of the Sami cultural area, often associated with the Kola Peninsula. The word itself is of Finnish origin, with "silmä" meaning "eye," suggesting a possible interpretation related to "people of the eye" or "people from the eye of the land." This designation was more of an exonym used by neighboring populations, rather than a self-identifier widely adopted by the Sami themselves.

The Silmäläinen were often described in historical accounts as distinct from other Sami groups due to certain cultural practices, language variations, and their geographical location. Their traditional livelihoods revolved around reindeer herding, fishing, and hunting, which were adapted to the specific environment of the Kola Peninsula. Over time, with increased interaction and assimilation, the distinctiveness of the Silmäläinen as a separate group has diminished, and the term itself is rarely used in contemporary discourse.
