Silmäläinen
Silmäläinen is a term that historically referred to a member of the Sami people, particularly those living in the easternmost parts of the Sami cultural area, often associated with the Kola Peninsula. The word itself is of Finnish origin, with "silmä" meaning "eye," suggesting a possible interpretation related to "people of the eye" or "people from the eye of the land." This designation was more of an exonym used by neighboring populations, rather than a self-identifier widely adopted by the Sami themselves.
The Silmäläinen were often described in historical accounts as distinct from other Sami groups due to certain
