Silmänverkkokalvo

Silmänverkkokalvo, scientifically known as the retina, is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. It is responsible for converting light into neural signals that are then sent to the brain, allowing us to see. The retina contains specialized cells called photoreceptors: rods and cones. Rods are highly sensitive to light and are responsible for vision in low-light conditions and for peripheral vision. Cones are less sensitive to light but are responsible for color vision and sharp central vision.

The retina is a complex structure with multiple layers of neurons. Light passes through these layers to reach the photoreceptors. The signals generated by the photoreceptors are then processed by other neurons within the retina before being transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. Damage to the retina can lead to various vision impairments, including blindness. Common retinal conditions include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment. Regular eye examinations are crucial for detecting and managing these conditions early.
