Silikaattihappoa, often referred to as silicic acid, is a term that can encompass a range of inorganic compounds containing silicon, hydrogen, and oxygen. In its simplest theoretical form, it is represented by the chemical formula H2SiO3. However, in reality, silicic acid is not a single, stable compound but rather a mixture of polysilicic acids formed by the hydrolysis of silicon compounds, particularly silicon halides or silicates, in water.

The formation of silicic acid is a common process in the Earth's crust and in aquatic environments. It arises from the dissolution of silicate minerals. In aqueous solutions, silicic acid exists in equilibrium with dissolved silica. The degree of polymerization, meaning the extent to which silicon-oxygen chains form, depends on factors such as pH, temperature, and the concentration of dissolved silica. At low concentrations, it exists primarily as monomeric silicic acid, Si(OH)4. As concentrations increase, it can polymerize to form dimers, trimers, and larger oligomers, eventually leading to the formation of colloidal silica particles.

Silicic acid plays a role in various natural processes. It is a crucial component in the biological systems of diatoms and radiolarians, which use it to build their intricate silica shells called frustules or tests. In geology, the precipitation of silicic acid contributes to the formation of chert and opal. Industrially, silicic acid and its polymeric forms are precursors to silica gels, precipitated silica, and fumed silica, materials widely used as desiccants, thickeners, abrasives, and in the production of glass and ceramics.
