Silaaniryhmät refers to a group of chemical compounds known as silanes. Silanes are organosilicon compounds with the general formula SinH2n+2, where n is a positive integer. They can be thought of as silicon analogs of alkanes. The simplest silane is monosilane, SiH4, which is analogous to methane. Higher silanes contain silicon-silicon bonds and are analogous to alkanes with multiple carbon atoms. For example, disilane has the formula Si2H6 and is analogous to ethane.

It is also used in the production of polysilicon, a material essential for solar cells. Certain organosilanes, which contain organic functional groups attached to the silicon atom, are used as coupling agents to improve adhesion between organic polymers and inorganic materials like glass and metals. These coupling agents are valuable in composites, sealants, and coatings. The study of silanes and their derivatives continues to be an active area of research in inorganic and materials chemistry.
