Siirtokellon

Siirtokellon is a Finnish term that translates to "relay clock" or "transfer clock." It refers to a mechanical or electrical device designed to synchronize time across multiple locations or devices. Historically, siirtokellon systems were used in large buildings, factories, and railway stations to ensure all clocks displayed the same time, preventing confusion and aiding in operational efficiency. These systems typically involved a master clock that transmitted timing signals to slave clocks, which would then adjust their mechanisms accordingly. The signals could be transmitted mechanically through shafts or electrically via wires. In more modern contexts, the concept of siirtokellon has largely been superseded by digital time synchronization protocols, such as Network Time Protocol (NTP), which achieve similar results with greater accuracy and flexibility. However, the term may still be encountered in historical discussions of timekeeping technology or in niche mechanical applications where precise synchronization of electromechanical devices is required.
