Siirtohäviöt, a Finnish term, translates to "transmission losses" or "transfer losses" in English. This concept is primarily encountered in the context of energy grids, particularly electrical power transmission. Siirtohäviöt refer to the energy that is dissipated as heat during the process of transferring electricity from power generation facilities to consumers.

These losses occur due to the resistance of the transmission lines themselves. As electrical current flows through these conductors, a portion of the energy is converted into thermal energy, which is then lost to the surrounding environment.
