Signaaltransduksioon, also known as signal transduction, is a process by which a signal from outside a cell is converted into a specific cellular response. This process is crucial for the regulation of various cellular activities, including cell growth, differentiation, and death. Signal transduction pathways typically involve a series of molecular events that amplify and transmit the initial signal, ensuring that the cellular response is both specific and robust.

The process begins with the reception of an extracellular signal, such as a hormone, growth factor, or neurotransmitter, by a specific receptor on the cell surface. This interaction can lead to various outcomes, including the activation of intracellular signaling molecules, such as kinases, phosphatases, and guanine nucleotide exchange factors. These molecules then propagate the signal through a cascade of biochemical reactions, ultimately leading to the activation of transcription factors or other effectors that mediate the cellular response.

Signal transduction pathways can be classified into several categories based on the type of receptor and the nature of the signaling molecules involved. Phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of signaling molecules, as well as the degradation of signaling components, are key regulatory mechanisms that ensure the timely termination of the signal transduction process. This regulation is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and preventing excessive or inappropriate cellular responses.
